Demonstrators Greet Premier

The weather was warm but not the reception as an Ontario Premier visited Sarnia for the first time since 2007. Kathleen Wynne was met by anti-wind turbine and Sarnia Jail protesters as she arrived for the opening of a Community Garden at Goodwill Industries at Wellington and Murphy. The new Liberal Premier’s first order of business was an interview with Sue Storr on CHOK’s The Talk Show at 9 this morning. She said the province’s new green energy rules are not necessarily retroactive with 22 projects already approved, many of which are in the Lambton-Middlesex area. Read article
Group Wants Wind Farm Info Online

A local wind action group is calling on the provincial government to make information on wind farms more accessible. Members of the Middlesex Wind Action Group participated in a 2 hour ”read-in” at the Exeter Road Ministry of the Environment offices Friday.
They were there to read the one and only hard copy of a plan for a wind farm going up near Parkhill. The group’s leader, Esther Wrightman, says traveling to the MOE in London is the only way to get access to specific details on wind farm plans. Wrightman says the provincial government should make the documents available online and in township offices and libraries in rural communities.

Tim Hudak’s energy critic says the Green Energy Act is pitting neighbour against neighbour.
Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli spoke at a town hall meeting in Strathroy last night, where he says at least 250 people shared their thoughts for and against wind farms. “The health concerns came up. We have issues where it pits friend against friend, farmer against farmer, family against family, in terms of ‘I need the cash from the wind turbine’ versus ‘don’t put that next to me.’”
Fedeli says at tonight’s town hall in Blenheim, he’ll talk about how soaring energy costs caused by the Green Energy Act are behind the province’s high unemployment rate.
The meeting gets underway at 7 pm at Deer Run Golf Course.

The focus and the message was as strong as wind blowing on a wind turbine, but last night at Amy’s Restaurant a jammed packed crowd of well over 200 filed in to listen and have their opinions heard on the issue of wind turbine and solar power. It was a town hall meeting hosted by Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton and the message was clear. To listen to constituents and take the message forward.
A wide variety of speakers addressed the crowd including farm residents, to wind action group members to people concerned that their health problems had to do with these turbines. The dignitary head table was comprised of McNaughton, PC Energy Critic and Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli, Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey, Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson, and Chatham-Kent MPP Rick Nicholls
McNaughton Slams McGuinty

Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton doesn’t believe Premier Dalton McGuinty’s comment at the ROMA conference, that he’s willing to give municipalities more say over green energy projects.
“No one believes this premier anymore,” says McNaughton. “He’s made many promises on different things and has never stuck to his word.”
McNaughton says his constituency offices continue to be bombarded by concerns over industrial wind farms.

Don McGugan says a local group opposing a four-turbine wind-farm development in his municipality faces an uphill battle. The Brooke-Alvinston Mayor says the Middlesex-Lambton Wind Action Group will have to make a strong argument to an Environmental Review Tribunal when a hearing begins next month.
The Wind Action Group says it will be calling 25 witnesses, including two experts, when the 10-session hearing begins March 7th at the Brooke-Alvinston-Inwood Community Centre.
Tribunal Hearing To Proceed

A motion to dismiss an Environmental Review Tribunal hearing against the developer of a four-turbine wind farm in Brooke-Alvinston has been denied. The tribunal will hear from the Middlesex-Lambton Wind Action Group beginning in March. The province’s Environment Ministry had been trying to get the hearing thrown out, claiming the appellant’s arguments are repeats of what has been heard in passed hearings. The Wind Action Group’s Esther Wrightman says it’s important hearings be held on a case-by-case basis.
Wrightman says the Wind Action Group has 25 witnesses, including two experts lined up to speak at the hearing. The 10-session hearing begins March 7th at the Brooke-Alvinston-Inwood Community Centre, with two days of video-conference scheduled for Toronto.
Zephyr Turbine Opposition

The Lambton-Middlesex Wind Action Group is lashing out against construction of 4 wind turbines at the Zephyr wind farm just southwest of Watford.
Some 40 protesters held a peaceful demonstration at the site this afternoon, slowing down activity by getting in front of gravel hauling trucks.
This led to warnings from Police but no arrests had been made.
Protester Blair Allin calls the industrialization of Ontario “unacceptable”.
The group has protested against a number of local wind farm developments, and is currently preparing for an environmental review tribunal hearing against the Zephyr project.

An Ontario Environment Ministry lawyer says an appeal of a four-turbine wind-farm project near Watford, is laughable and a mockery. At an Environmental Review Tribunal preliminary hearing in Wyoming today (Thurs), Frederika Rotter asked for the appeal to be dismissed saying it’s based on concerns, not fact. Esther Wrightman of the Middlesex-Lambton Wind Action Group calls the Ministry’s posture “insulting”.

The Tribunal will consider the motion to “dismiss” January 6th. If a hearing does proceed, it’s set to begin February 21st in Brooke Alvinston.
Hearing Delayed

Those interested in a four-turbine wind farm near Watford were met by locked doors at a planned Environmental Review Tribunal hearing in Wyoming Thursday. The preliminary hearing was rescheduled by the province, with little-to-no public notification. Brooke-Alvinston Mayor Don McGugan sent representation to the meeting, only to be notified by mail that the hearing had been called off.
Observers and those with standing found the Lambton County Council Chambers dark and were sent home with rescheduled dates and locations yet to be confirmed. The Environmental Review Tribunal’s website says a preliminary hearing will be held December 22nd with county staff noting the council chambers have been booked for the day.
Breezy Debate in Lambton Shores
Wind Concerns Ontario bringing their Truth About Turbines Tour to Lambton Shores..at Bosanquet Central School. While wind turbine companies have no problems selling residents on the benefits of wind generated electricity, they fail to mention the negative aspects.
President of Wind Concerns Ontario, John Laforet, was one of the guest speakers at last night’s Lambton Shores Concerned Citizens Group community meeting, and noted that frequently wind generated electricity is wasted.
Residents who had been effected by wind turbines were present, noting symptoms like the insomnia, and nausea.

The Leader of the Middlesex Wind Action Group is expressing her frustration with the provincial government, saying concerns over the health impacts of wind turbines are being ignored. Esther Wrightman organized a rally at Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Maria Van Bommel’s Strathroy office last weekend.
She says she was promised by the MPP that the concerns would be raised at Queen’s Park, but it turned out to be an opportunity for Van Bommel to advance the Liberal government’s green agenda instead.
Van Bommel disagrees.
Some 80 protestors said Saturday a moratorium on new wind farms is needed until health impact studies are completed.

Protesters will march 550 metres against wind turbines this morning (Sat) which just happens to be the minimum distance a wind turbine can be from an Ontario home.
The protest kicks off at Strathroy’s Kenwick Mall and ends at Lambton Kent Middlesex MPP Maria VanBommel’s office.
Wind Action Group Leader Esther Wrightman says they want the provincial government to further study wind turbines before erecting more.
Today’s event begins at 11:00am from Kenwick Mall in Downtown Strathroy, with the march set for 11:30.
